Whiskey Smash Cocktail
Today we’re going to use these to make the Whiskey Smash Cocktail, but first so let’s get into the history of the Whiskey Smash. Now the Whiskey Smash was first written about in Gerry Thomas’s 1862 book “How to Mix Drinks“. This classic drink falls between a Whiskey Sour on one side and a Mint Julep on the other. It is considered part of the julep family. In his 1887 edition of his book Jerry Thomas called the Whiskey Smash the Julep on a small plan. Ok let’s fast-forward to 1888 and barman Harry Johnson unlike Thomas he addresses this mash directly as being a separate cocktail from a julep. Now the smash also makes an appearance in the 1930’s assembling cocktail book. It’s included under the umbrella of juleps and the smash as is listed as a variation on the theme. McMurray describes a drink as minty and sour and I don’t know thirst-quenching it certainly doesn’t contain any of whiskey’s violence personally I don’t think whiskey is violent I kind of like it so let’s get into making a whiskey smash.
